Important information about Tamiflu
Tamiflu is used to treat flu symptoms caused by influenza virus in patients who have had symptoms for less than 2 days. Tamiflu may also be given to prevent influenza in people who may be exposed but do not yet have symptoms.

"Oseltamivir" will not treat the common cold. The influenza virus is often mistaken for a common cold; however there are clear differences between the two. The common cold is a much less serious illness, taking a few days for symptoms to progress.

The flu symptoms usually appear and progress very rapidly, leaving its hosts unable to work or function to the best of their ability for up to a week. In rare cases the flu can be fatal, and it is particularly dangerous to the very young, old and those with existing health complications.

How should you as an individual react to influenza?
Vaccination is only a possibility in the case of influenza, but you have to realize that you always have to rely on last years choice of viral components.

There is never a guarantee the vaccine protects against the most recent viral mutant that is causing this years infections. For the other infections like SARS (with a death rate of 10%) and chickenpox no vaccine exists and virologists worry that a combination between SARS or chickenpox viral material with influenza virus will result in an uncontrollable epidemic outbreak as happened in 1918. In that case only an anti-viral like Tamiflu can help you. But, in case of a rapidly spreading epidemic your chance of getting in time any anti viral medication at all will be nil. Therefore, if you are traveling a lot or live in a big city you are at risk and would be well advised to stock some Tamiflu, just in case.

Tamiflu is made by Roche Germany and comes as a capsule to take by mouth, in a package of 10 capsules containing 75 mg of the anti-viral oseltamivir. The product is registered for the European Union under # EU/1/02/222/001.

Tamiflu can either be used as a prophylactic to prevent an infection by taking 1 capsule a day or to recover from an infection by taking 1 capsule twice a day for 5 days.

Tamiflu may be combined with influenza vaccination.
